Using an English Dictionary…

Finding a word

Before begin to use a dictionary, make sure that we know the order of the letters of the alphabet. It will save your time.

The alphabet:

a b c d e f g h I j k lm n o p q r s t u v w x y z  – small letters

A B C D E FG H I J K L M N O P Q R ST U V X Y Z – CAPITALS

Words are listed according to their first letter. This is call alphabetical order. There are, of course, many words that begin with the same letter so we must look at the second letter, the third letter an so on. For example, hire comes before hoard because i comes before o in the alphabet.

Prefixes and Suffixes

PREFIXES..
A prefix is a group of letters ADDED BEFORE a word or base to alter its meaning and form a new word. 


Common Prefixes..
dis = means not and opposite of
example : disagree, disable

 



SUFFIXES..
A suffix is a group of letters ADDED AFTER a word or base to alter its meaning and form a new word.


Common suffixes..
ful = full of
example : careful, joyful

Jabberwocky a poem by lewis carroll

hi.. this is my first time i read this poem.. as you all know,this poem comes from alice in wonderland movie and i never watch it until now.. ehehee.. at first i found it really hard for me to pronounce it.. When miss cheah want us to read it in group,i smiling by myself because i felt like i'm the worst who pronounce it badly.. Many word that i never seen before, and miss cheah told us that most of the word are not available in dictionary.. She teach us how to predict the meaning of difficult word in the context  without looking the dictionary.. It is call CONTEXTUAL CLUES..  This is how the poem was look a like.. enjoy read it and feel free to drop your comment k.. ^-^  

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree.
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came wiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.
